{"id":574,"date":"2019-08-01T21:05:59","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T21:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stephencosgrove.com\/bookstore\/?p=574"},"modified":"2019-08-01T21:05:59","modified_gmt":"2019-08-01T21:05:59","slug":"the-real-story-of-leo-the-lop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephencosgrove.com\/bookstore\/the-real-story-of-leo-the-lop\/","title":{"rendered":"The real story of Leo the Lop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stephencosgrove.com\/bookstore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/sc-serendipity-leo-hc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-474\" src=\"https:\/\/stephencosgrove.com\/bookstore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/sc-serendipity-leo-hc-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Leo the Lop Serendipity Collector\u2019s Series\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephencosgrove.com\/bookstore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/sc-serendipity-leo-hc-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/stephencosgrove.com\/bookstore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/sc-serendipity-leo-hc-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stephencosgrove.com\/bookstore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/sc-serendipity-leo-hc-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/stephencosgrove.com\/bookstore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/sc-serendipity-leo-hc-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/stephencosgrove.com\/bookstore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/sc-serendipity-leo-hc.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Leo the Lop was a real rabbit and was not only the inspiration for the book by the same name, actually nearly wrote the book himself. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When Robin James and I first began working together, I would, with much trepidation, agree to meet her at her parent\u2019s home, where she lived.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The trepidation was caused by the largest rabbit I had ever had the fear of knowing, Leo.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Leo was, of course, a lop, a flop-earred rabbit whose ears hung down, not up like the other traditional bunnies that were also in residence. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Leo\u2019s other attribute was that he weighed nearly 45 pounds and (a big AND) had a bit of an attitude when it came to the kindly folks that would come to visit \u2014 he would often spontaneously bite those that got in his way.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So, it was that whenever I came to meet with Robin I would sit statue-still hoping he would ignore me and hop on to attack others \u2014 never the luck.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No matter where I sat cowering, he would seek me out.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For, you see, Leo liked me, liked me a lot.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He would hop down the hall, into the living room and without hesitation thunderously thump over to me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There he would sit up, his head towering above my knees and stare intently at me, deciding if I was friend, foe or food.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then, without fail, he would rest his massive head on my knees and I would gently scratch between his ears, sometimes, it seemed, for hours.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I scratched without complaint, for many times I had seen him bite those \u2018others\u2019 that were not as subservient as myself.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With little to do but scratch, I had plenty of time for wondering. \u201cWhy did he act like this?
